EAU DE PARFUM OR EAU DE TOILETTE: WHICH TO CHOOSE?

WHAT IS PERFUME CONCENTRATION?

Perfume concentration refers to the percentage of natural essential oils and synthetic fragrance molecules (the scent composition) dissolved in a solvent, usually alcohol. There are five main fragrance categories, ranked by increasing concentration:

  • Cologne

  • Eau de Toilette

  • Eau de Parfum

  • Extrait (Parfum)

  • Perfume Oil

Most we use Eau de Parfum and Extrait concentrations to achieve the best balance of longevity, sillage, and projection.

EAU DE COLOGNE

Eau de Cologne, or simply Cologne, contains 2-5% fragrance concentration. It is typically composed of fresh, citrusy notes, making it an excellent choice for warm weather and

a quick skin refresh. Cologne is designed for a light, short-lived scent rather than long-lasting wear. Classic examples include Jean Marie Farina’s original cologne, 4711 Cologne, and Mugler Cologne.

EAU DE TOILETTE

Eau de Toilette (EDT) has a fragrance concentration of 5-15%. While its alcohol content is higher, it offers a more pronounced and longer-lasting scent than cologne.

EDTs are ideal for those seeking a refined yet noticeable fragrance. Popular examples include Acqua di Giò, Dior Sauvage, and Narciso Rodriguez For Her.

EAU DE PARFUM

Eau de Parfum (EDP) has a higher concentration of 15-20% or more, resulting in a richer, more intense scent. EDPs often feature bold notes such as gourmand, musky, animalic, or amber accords.

Three words describe EDPs: powerful, elegant, charismatic. They leave a lasting impression, often before you even see the person wearing them. Some signature EDPs include Ambre Supreme and Cyanide by Scentspiracy.

EXTRAIT (PARFUM)

Extrait de Parfum, or simply Parfum, is the most concentrated fragrance form, with 20-30% essential oils. These fragrances are denser, more oil-based, and longer-lasting on the skin.

Extraits have gained immense popularity in recent years, as consumers increasingly seek long-lasting and intense scents. A perfect example is Tuberosa from the Real Fake collection, a rich, fresh, and hypnotic tuberose fragrance.

EXTRAIT VS. EAU DE PARFUM OR EAU DE TOILETTE: WHICH TO CHOOSE?

There is no definitive answer. Some Eau de Parfum compositions may perform better than certain Extraits, depending on the formulation. The best choice ultimately depends on your personal preferences and desired scent experience.
